Sambo’s brother dies in auto crash
VICE President Namadi Sambo, on Sunday, lost his immediate younger
brother, Captain Yusuf Sabo Sambo, in a car accident that occurred on
the Bill Clinton Drive section of Airport Road, Abuja, on Sunday.
He was aged 58.
The deceased was a qualified pilot who worked with the former
Nigerian Airways and the Presidential Air Fleet before retirement.
A
statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President
on Media and Publicity, Umar Sani, said the deceased was survived by his
wife and three daughters.
He had since been buried at the Apo cemetery, Abuja, according to
Islamic rites, in a ceremony witnessed by former military president,
General Ibrahim Babangida; former head of state, General Abdulsalami
Abubakar and several other sympathisers.
President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, were at the Aguda
House residence of the Vice President in the Presidential Villa, Abuja,
to personally condole with him over the sad event.
Jonathan expressed shock over the incident and prayed God to give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
The President described the incident as “extremely sad,” adding that
such people were needed at a time himself and the vice president were
busy attending to national issues.
The president also condoled with the government and people of Kaduna State over the loss.
Senate President, David Mark, also on Sunday, commiserated with Vice President Sambo over the death of his brother.
Mark, in a condolence message to the family, said Nigeria had lost one of its best pilots.
He said he was one of the best pilots Nigeria had produced, adding
that “It is regrettable that Nigeria has lost one of its finest pilots
and officers of high repute. I also pray that the Almighty God will
grant the deceased eternal rest.”
Sambo, who just returned from an official trip to Tanzania, on
Sunday, thanked the president for the visit, describing his late
brother as one of the most experienced pilots in the country.
Also present at the residence were Inspector General of Police,
Mohammed Abubakar; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala
Mohammed and Minister of State for Defense Musiliu Obanikoro.
Others included businessman, Arthur Eze, Kaduna State governor,
Ramallan Yero; Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau; former Minister of
Defence, Haliru Bello Mohammeda; National Security Adviser ( NSA),
Colonel Sambo Dasuki; Head of Service, Goni Bukar Aji; Minister of
Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki and many others.
Kaduna State governor, Yero, condoled with Vice President Sambo over the death of his younger brother.
Governor Yero described the death of Captain Sambo as shocking and
painful, saying it came at a time when the retired airforce officer was
contributing meaningfully to the aviation sector.
