Zuma fills science and tech post

President Jacob Zuma has appointed Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, the leader of the National Freedom Party and Member of Parliament, as the deputy minister of science and technology.

KaMagwaza-Msibi is also the former mayor of the Zululand District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal and was the chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party. Her new party scored 1.57% of the national vote in May's elections.
This evening, the Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Justice Dunstan Mlambo, will swear in KaMagwaza-Msibi at a function at the Union Buildings.
After the elections, Naledi Pandor was retained as minister of the Department of Science and Technology – a post she held between 2009 and 2012.
The department recently launched the first of 64 antennas that will make up SA's new radio telescope – the MeerKat – as a precursor to the much larger square kilometre array.
It has also earmarked R80 million for support programmes enabling young, unemployed graduates to gain work experience in science, engineering and technology institutions.
