According to a report by News 24,
the Nelson Mandela Foundation has confirmed that South African rally
champion, Gugu Zulu, has died. The report revealed that Zulu had died
while attempting to climb Kilimanjaro on Mandela Day in Tanzania.
As revealed by the report, Zulu was climbing Kilimanjaro with his
wife Letshego Zulu as well as project leader Richard Mabaso for the
Trek4Mandela expedition. The team was also being led by experienced
mountaineer, Sibusiso Vilane.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce that one of the climbers
on the Trek4Mandela, Gugu Zulu lost his life while summiting Kilimanjaro
early this morning,” a statement read within the report.
“On behalf of the Board and staff of the Nelson Mandela Foundation we
extend our sincere condolences to his wife Letshego Zulu, their
daughter Lelethu and the Zulu family on this tragic loss.”
According to the report, the foundation had stated that the details
around Zulu’s death were sketchy, but that they did know that he had
suffered breathing problems.
It was also stated within the report that a medical team supporting
the trek had placed Zulu on a drip as they descended the mountain with
him. It was further revealed that the medical team had tried everything
possible to save his life, but could not.
Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation is devastated by
the news and revealed that he had known Zulu well, and had recruited him
to climb Kilimanjaro. Zulu also mentioned to Hatang, according to the
report, that he wanted to get involved in other Mandela Day projects.Social media has mourned the loss of Zulu by paying tribute to him on social media.
