Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri became one of the giant killers at the ongoing Olympic Games after he worked his way into the fourth round of the men’s singles by beating Chuang Chih-Yuan of Chinese Taipei.
Amidst huge support from the Brazilian fans, Quadri who is ranked
number 40 recorded an emphatic 4-0 win over his opponent who is world
number seven.
Quadri will next play Germany’s Timo Boll.
Meanwhile, World table tennis ruling body, the International Table
Tennis Federation are making plans to organise a ceremony in Rio to
honour Nigeria’s Segun Toriola for becoming the first African to make a
7th Olympic appearance.
The Nigeria legend was edged out 4-2 by Japan’s Niwa Koki in the
second round of the men’s singles event of table tennis after he had
earlier outplayed Czech Republic’s Dimitrij Prokopcov in the first
round.
In the women’s singles event, the quartet of Egypt’s Dina Meshref and
Nadeen El-Dawlatly, Congo’s Han Xing, and Nigeria’s Olufunke Oshonaike
and Edem Offiong all crashed out in the first round.
