There was more than a whiff of controversy about the penalty that brought up an historic goal for Sergio Aguero but the record books will not list Burnley’s grievances, as legitimate as they may have been.
They will only tell the story of how Aguero claimed his 177th goal in Manchester City colours to equal Eric Brook’s all-time scoring record and set his side on course for a hard fought victory that, in itself, was record setting. This was the first time in a single season that City have won 11 consecutive matches, and with rivals Manchester United suffering a shock defeat at Huddersfield, allowed Pep Guardiola’s side to open up a five point gap at the top of the Premier League table.
