What distinguishes a mid-range smartphone from a flagship device? Its camera, display, internal specifications, or all of the above? With 2017 coming to a close, South Korean electronics major Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy A8 and A8+ (2018) smartphones, and they tick nearly almost all the checkboxes found on 2017 flagships albeit with minor downgrades.
1. Dual selfie cameras: While Samsung is not the first to implement dual front-facing cameras on its devices, the A8 and A8+ feature a 16MP+8MP setup with f/1.9. Samsung claims that with two separate cameras, users can switch between the two to take different types of selfies such as from close-ups with the background to portrait shots with a clear background.
2. Infinity Display: Samsung brings its Infinity Display to mid-range devices. The A8 and A8+ sport a 5.6-inch and 6.0-inch Super AMOLED screen with Full HD+ (1080x2220) resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratios. The nearly bezel-less displays reportedly offer an immersive, cinematic viewing experience. The display also has curved glass on the back and front. In addition, with Always On Display, the display of the phone lights up without unlocking the device.
3. Water Resistance: The smartphones offer IP 68 water and dust resistance and can reportedly withstand elements such as sweat, rain, sand and dust.
4. Live Focus feature: Live Focus is what Samsung is calling its depth of field mode. Users can adjust the bokeh effect before or after they've taken the picture. The dual camera setup also reportedly improves images in low-light conditions. With 'fun options', images can be customised from adding stickers to selfies or highlighting delicacies with Food Mode.
5. Fast Charging and USB Type-C support: Both, Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8+ support fast charge. The battery on the A8 is a 3000mAH and on the A8 plus is 3500mAh.
Additional features- The Galaxy A8+ is also available in a 6GB RAM option compared to the 4GB on the A8. Both smartphones are available in four colour options including black, orchid grey, gold and blue.
