Trump said: “Perhaps we can negotiate a different agreement perhaps involving China and others.
“Or perhaps we can’t in which case we will outspend and out-innovate all others by far.”
Russia quickly followed suit by withdrawing from the deal a day after the US.
The
treaty was signed by the two superpowers in 1987, signed by then US
President Ronald Reagan and former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail
Gorbachev.
While he may have ended the deal, Trump’s call to China comes as the two countries are locked in a trade war.
Moreover,
the US has planned to raise tariffs on Chinese goods next month which
could have huge ramifications to the global economy according to the UN.
The US plans to increase tariffs on Chinese goods if the two sides fail to make progress on any trade deal by March 1.
If
the two countries fail to reach an agreement, the US has said it will
increase tariff rates from 10 percent to 25 percent on £152 billion
($200 billion) worth of Chinese goods.
