President
Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly ordered Kemi Adeosun, Nigeria’s finance
minister to pay outstanding debts to civil servants in the country. Daily Post
refers to a statement issued in Abuja by the head of Civil Service of the
federation, Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, in which the federal government informed
that it will pay the civil servants death benefits, promotion arrears and other
outstanding debts, running to about N300 billion.
According
to Oyo-Ita, the bills include promotion arrears, repatriation allowance and
death benefits, among others which total is about N293 billion. The permanent
secretary who spoke with newsmen said this new development was part of the
activities marking the 2016 Civil Service week celebration. Mrs Adeosun and the
office of the Accountant General of the Federation have both been asked to seek
ways of making the payments with immediate effect. In Kano state, nine
officials of the state ministry for local government were recently booted out
while a director with the ministry of finance was also suspended over alleged
fraud. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the office of the Head of Service,
Mustapha Fagge, in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano on Thursday, August 4,
also indicated that four officials had been handed over to the police for
tampering with pension funds. According to the statement, the nine affected
workers and director were indicted in the report of the committee which
